Billy Koh is one of the most instrumental and influential figures in Singapore music industry. Founder of Ocean Butterflies Music Pte Ltd, Billy together with his team, re-shaped Singapore Chinese-pop music landscape in the past 20-over years, making it an impact in the Asia music scene today.
Way before the 90’s, no one would have thought seriously about Singapore music in the entire Asia Chinese-Pop scene. In 1994, Billy successfully produced and launched Kit Chan’s (陳潔儀) debut album in Taiwan & made it a big hit with his composition, ‘Heartache’ (心痛). The move opens a new horizon for Singapore artists as Taiwan, Hong Kong and other Asian countries began to take notice of Singapore music.
In 2002, Billy produced a record-breaking album by successfully crafting a ‘construction worker-turned-superstar’ legend, A-Do (阿杜). With debut album sold for more than 2 millions copies within six months across Asia, A-Do’s fame spread across almost all-Chinese population including that of China, Taiwan, United States & many Asian countries. Billboard magazine covered the story of A-Do in Feb 8th 2003’s issue.
In 2003, Billy produced & launched another young Singapore composer-singer, JJ Lin (林俊傑). JJ’s debut album was so well-received across the pan-Chinese regions that led JJ to win for the Best New-comer in 15th Taiwan’s Gold Melody Awards (臺灣金曲獎), an equivalent of Asian Grammy Awards.
In 2004, Billy was awarded the ‘Best Producer’ for JJ’s 2nd album, Haven (第二天堂) in China National Music Award (中國原創歌曲獎). This is the first time for Singaporean to received musical awards & recognition from China National Statutory Board.
In 2007, Billy was invited to speak in a high-level conference held in Brussels jointly organized by European Commission, SABAM (Belgium Society of Authors, Composers & Publishers) and Music Copyright Society of China and Peking University’s master-class in June & December respectively.
In 2008, Billy was invited to speak in MidemNet Forum 2008 held in Cannes, Canadian Music Industry Mission to Asia held in Tokyo & Nanyang Technology University's EMBA class.
Throughout his 25 years of full-time music career, Billy has produced more than 150 albums and is credited for discovering and grooming many top artists who made it big in Asia. Currently; he is the Director of Ocean Butterflies International Pte Ltd and Regional ‘
Artiste & Repertoire Director’ of Ocean Butterflies Music (
